Oktagon - film premiere

THE OCTAGON portrays a day in the life of a fictional female mixed martial artist based in Serbia. The protagonist is the first Serbian woman to be signed to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and is training for a major tournament in Toronto. Inspired by the aesthetics of sports media and promotional videos, and combining found footage with staged performance, The Octagon is a personal, subtly political, and absurdist account of who the artist might have become had her parents not fled now-ex Yugoslavia during the Civil War and raised her in their native Belgrade instead of Toronto.

IVANA DIZDAR is a Serbian-Canadian artist and filmmaker based in Toronto. Often through the use of humour, her work draws from disparate genres, styles, and forms in order to explore their relationship with identity, iconography, authority, success, failure, fiction, and truth. Recent and upcoming projects include exhibitions at Y+ Contemporary (Scarborough) and Bunker 2 Contemporary Art Container (Toronto). Dizdar was a recipient of the OCAD Off-Screen Award — Strongest New Media Work at the 2017 Images Festival (Canada). She holds a BA in Visual Studies and Film Studies from the University of Toronto.

Produced and presented with the generous support of The European Centre for Culture and Debate, The Ontario Arts Council, The Belgrade University School of Fine Art, Radio Laguna Belgrade, and Kaizen MMA Academy.
